Sex.com Auction May Not Happen Tomorrow

I have it on good authority that a petition was filed in Bankruptcy court late this afternoon to stay the foreclosure proceedings on the Sex.com domain. The auction is currently scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Will Sex.com Sell At Thursday’s Foreclosure Auction?

Published on March 16th, 20103 comment

By now, everyone on the planet, or at least the domain and adult world knows that Sex.com is in a foreclosure auction this Thursday. As Elliot Silver notes in his blog, the auction is being classified as having No Reserve:

From Eliotts Blog:
“I was just informed by Richard Maltz of Maltz Auctions that there will be no reserve price for the Sex.com auction. Registered bidders will be permitted to bid online or in person at the Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf, LLP offices. In addition, Maltz added, “the secured party does reserve the right to bid under the law.”

The truth of the matter is, there is a reserve. As with most Real estate auctions, the secured party will be there and out bid any low bidders. They will have to decide when to cut their loses.I know personally that in the past the lenders have been unwilling to bend under 8 figures. Whether that will be the case on Thursday is anyone’s guess. The excellent promotion of this auction will bring out every player possible. My thoughts is that it will not sell on Thursday but someone will be able to put a deal together within days or a few weeks after the auction similar to the way Porn.com did not sell at it’s auction but had a deal together shortly after.

BTW for those of you with money to burn on this auction, feel free to inquire as to purchasing xxx.com.

Let’s Discuss – The Future Of Domains and Internet Companies

Published on March 15th, 2010one comment

Recently I had the opportunity to talk with some well known internet pioneers. This was totally by accident but I took the opportunity to ask them a few questions. The specific part of the conversation that I want to mention was our talk on domains and also our discussion of the larger internet companies. For generic domains, 3 out of the 4 thought they were the one of the best investments you could make to help get a jump on the competition in a specific category. They thought .com for business in the US was a necessity. They split as wether to use the domain alone as the business name or use it to direct traffic to the home page or related part of their business. All 4 thought the new tld’s would cause more confusion and mostly likely make business spend more money to protect their bands.

As for the Internet, we discussed what major companies would be on top 10 years from today. While 2 did not want to go out that far, they all agreed that Google’s grasp is enormous and if any company would be out in front it was them. They also gave high marks Ebay, Amazon and Facebook. When I asked about Yahoo, they felt that it was finally going in the right direction but in their minds they fell behind the other mentioned.

Please let me know your thoughts.

This freaked me out. “I Know You…Your Larry Fischer the Domainer”

Published on March 10th, 20104 comment

We sit here in our little domain world thinking we live in a bubble. Most people outside of this world have no idea who we are or what we do. If you live in this world, there is a good chance we know each other. Outside, we are just like everyone else, maybe a little more nerdy.

Here’s a amusing story I thought some of you might enjoy. As some of you know, my son Jeff is going to college next year. I told him if he wants to raise some cash to save for college, I have a bunch of stuff that he could put on Craigslist. He posted a few items and received an email inquiring about one of the items. The couple asked if they could come over and see it. When they arrived, I introduced myself, as did they. He had mentioned that he used to work in IT for a big bank but was now retired. He said I looked familiar but I did not recognize him. When he asked him what i did, I felt the easiest thing to say was that I was in internet marketing. He then startled me by asking are you Larry Fischer the domainer. At first I was stunned, but said yes. Do you you know me, I asked? He said he had very little domain knowledge but he remembered that we talked a few years earlier when he was looking into acquiring a domain for the Bank he worked at. Also he said that had read some articles in which I was mentioned.

At first it kind of freaked me out that this person knew who I was. But I guess in this word of Facebook, blogs and constant news, more people know about other people than we can imagine. BTW In case you were curious, he did not ask for an autograph.

Horoscopes.com -Is it really for sale?

Published on March 8th, 201017 comment

Last week I received an email from a Paul Ginsburg. Some of you may know that name as it was listed back in 2003 as the owner of Horoscopes.com and some other valuable generic domains. However, back in 2003 the whois email was bad and so was the phone number. Sometime around 2004 the name and all other domains associated with Paul Ginsburg were put under privacy. The email offered the name for between 600k and 700k .
My first thought was let’s get on the phone and discuss the name. I asked him to call me. He emailed no. I asked him to give me a phone number so I could call him. He emailed back again that he would not speak on the phone. He would not call me or give me a number to call him. I found that odd especially since it was a high figure deal.
I also noticed that he misspelled the domain horoscopes.com within his subject area (it was spelled correctly within the email). That could be petty but i would think if your asking that much for a six figure domain, you would spell it correctly in the subject area. They did want to use an escrow service, However that left me with no way to substaniate who they were if there were issues. In the end, I decided to pass on the name. I’m sure it will sell at a good price once a buyer finds his own comfort level with the seller of the name. BTW If someone can come up with title insurance for domains, it has the potential to be a good business.

Phishing Attack -Beware Of Fake GoDaddy.com Email

Published on March 3rd, 2010one comment

Beware. A very good phishing email is being sent out by some entity claiming to be Godaddy.com. The email is an exact copy of an email that Godaddy regularly send out for Icann review notices. When you click on the link in the email it takes you to a carbon copy of a Godaddy.com page however the Url contains godaiddiy.com not godaddy.com. The sender is trying to catch your user name and password. I will not include the full link as I do not want anyone to use it by accident. FYI Going to the main domain home page will not show the fraudulent site. I just spoke with Godaddy.com and they confirmed it and are trying to get the site taken down ASAP.

Do These Guys Deserve to Go To Jail?

Published on March 3rd, 2010no comments

The are many comparisons to the following story and domaining.

It seems a company called Wiseguys Tickets Inc. figured out a way to beat Ticketmaster and other ticket vendors the moment tickets went on sale (think of domains dropping). Wiseguys set up an elaborate automated system to go after these names so they could get multiple amounts of tickets (think domains) and then resell them at a higher value. The ticketing companies had tried to stop this type of automation by using Captcha (random words that have to be retyped in) and limiting the amount of tickets any one person could buy. Wiseguys was one step ahead of them by figuring out how to beat the Captcha’s and setting up various companies to buy the tickets. These methods turned out to be very profitable for Wiseguys as it is reported that they made over $25 million over the few years that they have been doing this. Why do I think that the ticket companies are going after these guys?. Plain and simple, It’s about money. Recently ticket vendors have set up or partnered with resale sites so that the ticket vendors and the artists could make more money by selling the same type of tickets that Wiseguy sold (think registrar auctions and domain drop auctions). So do these wiseguys deserve to go to jail or should more oversight be placed on the ticket vendors (registrars) ?

Here is a link to one of the articles regarding Wiseguys.
