Shaving My Head for Charity

Written on January 9th, 2016 by directnavigationno shouts

Whatever hair I haven’t pulled out of my head from dealing with the domain business will be shaved off in a charity fundraiser for the WaterSchool. Please click this link to read about the wonderful things that they do. If you have the ability to donate, please do. Any amount, whether small or large can make a huge difference.

Another 2 letter .Com Just Sold

Written on December 15th, 2015 by directnavigationno shouts

People ask if I still buy names. The answer is always that it depends on the domain and the price. With that said I found out that one of the domains that I had been monitoring has been sold but not yet transferred. It was a domain for obvious reasons that I would have liked to acquire, but it was already sold to somebody else.

The domain was LF.com, which happens to be my initials. I was told by the seller that the price was quite high but was not given further information. My guess is that it will be moving to China, but only time will tell.

On another note, SiteChat.com is still in beta. We are making updates as suggested by our beta testers. One such change is that we will be allowing messages to stay on the platform for a specified time(most likely 1 week). This will give users the opportunity to go back and forth between sites (such as domain auction or domain information sites and see all previous conversations). To be the valuable tool that it can be, I ask that you download the chrome version or firefox version and use it for such sites to start. If someone would like to lead a Sitechat conversation at a specific time, please email me- larry (at) Getyourdomain.com.

Use SiteChat.com – A Great Tool for Domain Auctions

Written on November 24th, 2015 by directnavigation5 shouts

I’m at a computer most of my day. Like most of us, I use the internet to shop, bid on auctions and other things that we used to have to go to a brick and mortar store for.

At the last domain conference, I enjoyed seeing friends, making new ones. One of the most exciting events is the live auction. I usually stand in the back with other domainers. We discuss many things including our thoughts on some of the domains being auctioned. This real world experience can not be experienced on a computer.

UNTIL NOW.

Sitechat.com is a tool which allows you to chat on any website on the web, even if that site does not offer chat. People visiting the same site can converse in the SiteChat box via text with all of their fellow SiteChat users or one to one via text or video in a private room.

I along with 2 other domainers helped put this tool together.

Ron Jackson, on DNJournal.com just wrote a great write up of the service, which is in beta.

I’m hoping that you will download the Chrome plugin and try it. Test it. Tell me about bugs. Tell me about meeting new domainers. There is a non plugin version on sitechat.com but the plugin is the way to go for full features.

I am concentrating on the domain industry in beta. I think we are the most entrepreneurial society of any people I have ever met.

Read Rons write up as he really puts into words what SiteChat can accomplish for you.

In addition to testing. I will start scheduling chats so domainers can meet other domainers at sites that do not have chat, such as domain auctions.

In addition, there is a trending area so you can jump easily between trending chats.

Please contact me here with any bugs, thoughts or just to say hi.

Please remember we just started this. It will take time to build and get perfect. Lets build this together.

Adam Dicker sells Mistress.com

Written on October 28th, 2015 by directnavigation3 shouts

A recent transaction that I am aware of was the sale of mistress.com. Adam sold the domain name in the past few days. The purchase price was $40,000. I think that the buyer did very well on this purchase.

Just turned down a 7 figure offer

Written on August 12th, 2015 by directnavigation30 shouts

Most deals that I work on require complete silence due to NDA’s. As such, almost all transactions and negotiations are not reported or discussed by me. However, I do get unsolicited offers that do not bound me by those restrictions. I thought I’d share one that we turned down and get your thoughts on it.

Anything.com owns both VR.com and VirtualReality.com. According to Techcrunch, Virtual Reality is To hit $150 BILLION and disrupt mobile by 2020. Other well known deals in VR includes Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR, and Google’s investment in Magic Leap.

This List of startups in the VR world just on angel list includes over 200 companies with many VR firms hiring for VR related jobs.

The offer we turned down was in the 7 figures. One broker I discussed this with yesterday thinks the right firm could pay upwards of 50 million USD for the pair. Is that possible? As I’ve learned with almost 20 years in this business, anything is possible. If you have some thoughts, Please LMK.

WHATS SO FUNNY ??? Must be the URL….

Written on January 9th, 2015 by directnavigationno shouts

The NYtimes wrote an interesting article last Thursday discussing URL’s that which are not being optimized for SEO rankings. Instead the URL is tailored to be funny, hoping that people reading it will forward it to others, thereby creating a “social URL”.

examples include

” an article posted on Engadget, a website that reports on and reviews tech products, about a wearable device that monitors sexual activity. In the URL, the writer issued something of a mea culpa: engadget.com/2014/08/07/bondara-sexfit-i-used-to-be-a-serious-journalist/ ”

and

buzzfeed.com/daves4/just-donate-the-money, which takes readers to the article “22 People Who Should Definitely Not Have Taken the Ice Bucket Challenge.”

” Traditionally, URLs have always closely mirrored the headline. The so-called social URL is written not with Google analytics or search engine optimization in mind. The hope is that a story will get shared a lot by those who appreciate a cleverly placed joke.”

Over 80% of 2 number .com ( NN.com) under Chinese control

Written on September 22nd, 2014 by directnavigationno shouts

Due to the rising NN.com pricing, yesterday I took a look at all 2 Number .com domains form 01.com all the way up to 99.com. From the whois information, I looked at registrants, both current and prior, registrars they are at and spoke with some of the domainers that currently own or those that owned them in the past. While I knew they were a hot commodity, I was surprised at the monopoly the Chinese investors have on these domains. Over 80% is owned or under the control of Chinese domainers
I will be looking at other markets that the Chinese have been buying lately, such as nnn.com, LLL.com and LL.com. and make a report on those in the future.

Does GTLD stand for “Going to Lose Dough”?

Written on January 21st, 2014 by directnavigation10 shouts

Last week I was at Namescon. First I have to give Richard, Jodi and Jothan a huge congratulations. They put on the first of what I think will be EPIC shows.
Much discussion was placed on the new Gtld’s verse the existing tld’s (mostly .com’s) Of course there were many that were looking forward to their arrival. These positive folks mostly were represented by those that were involved financially in the process. The .com lovers were mostly older domainers that had seen .mobi, .xxx and others fail miserably for the investors, but made lots of dough for the registries, auction houses and registrars.

I do think some Gtld’s will be a winner for all involved including domain investors. Others will help the average business looking for a simple domain that they could not otherwise get at an affordable price.

Speaking with a long time domainer today, he told me that Gtld stood for “Going to Lose Dough”. At first I laughed but I had to commend his reasoning. “Its a lot like Las Vegas”, he said. “The house are the Gtlds and the investors are the gamblers. Since the house usually comes out ahead, many investors may have found the meaning of Gtld.”

It’s only a matter of time to see if he’s right or wrong.
