Guest Post From Oversee CEO Jeff Kupietzky

Written on January 21st, 2010 by directnavigationone shout

Oversee has had some ups and downs over the last year but they continue to remain strong and are one of the giants in the Direct Navigation business. Their Domainfest Conference starts next Tuesday. I recently asked Jeff Kupietzky to do a guest post which he was kind enough to do. Here is the post directly from Jeff.

What we saw in 2009:

2009 was a year of retrenching, not just for our industry but for businesses everywhere, thanks to economic and financial problems around the world. It’s a testament to the value of what comprises our industry that we didn’t go the way of the automakers. Online real estate is just tremendously valuable, as are the services that help people and businesses develop them.

What’s ahead for 2010:

Consolidation should play a fairly big role. Stronger players who invest well will get stronger and I believe we’ll see exits by the weaker ones. People and companies will need to be well-equipped to grow further into this space.

PPC as a stand-alone model will have to transform, and build-out is a very compelling alternative. There is a great deal of opportunity in this area. Also, we’ll begin to see development of mobile and social networking traffic—this is where everyone is spending their time and we expect to play in that area. So there will be opportunities to monetize beyond the domain name space, which is what got us to this point.

If the ICANN process can get out of its own way, we’ll see new top-level domains develop further this year. ICANN is very keen to make this happen.

Finally, I believe there will be a rise in European and Asian traffic, and they’ll be considered valid markets for advertisers and publishers to pursue. That’s already happening, but it should become more pronounced in 2010.

The future of Oversee:

We’re excited about three areas of focus and growth for us. As the leader in monetization for direct navigation (parking) we’re bullish on future optimization enhancements to improve monetization as well as the opportunity to grow outside of our traditional US base. More than half of our traffic comes from outside the US but we still get most of our revenue domestically. There’s a big opportunity to use our technological know-how to close that gap.

The second key area is leveraging our strong assets in the aftermarket and registrar area to provide continued great service for our domain clients. This includes running the best expiry-drop service, the best live and online domain auctions, customized brokerage services and the premier relationship registrar offering.

Finally, we are believers in the buildout opportunities and have begun to invest in developing tools and solutions to help build out domains. This would include using our expertise in traffic management, landing page optimization and the other capabilities needed to evolve parked pages to deeper, more involved web properties.

DOMAINfest Global
If you’ve already registered for DOMAINfest Global 2010, we’re looking forward to seeing you there. If not, there’s still time! Just register at www.domainfest.com.

The agenda, as usual, is very full and offers a great deal of value. Our keynote speaker is Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, who will share fresh thinking and insights into online customer behaviors and intelligent risk- taking.

We’re also featuring PITCHfest, a new agenda item – in this rapid-fire session, up to five hand-picked finalists publicly unveil new, alpha- or beta-stage product and service ideas for increasing website traffic and revenue. The audience will be among the first to discover new ways to build out a domain name or increase revenue at an existing site. Real-time, text-message vote decides who gets the DOMAINfest Global 2010 Service Innovator award.

And, of course, there are top-notch social events. This year we’re having a networking dinner party at The Getty Museum. DOMAINfest has exclusive access to the museum for the evening, and this event will feature great networking, fun competitions and a chance to see some of the world’s best-known art.

The event will close with DomainSponsor’s annual party. For the second year, we’re hosting the party at the Playboy Mansion. The venue and format were so popular last year, we took attendees’ advice and returned to the mansion. The event will feature fundraising for Generation Rescue, Jenny McCarthy’s foundation to find a cure for autism.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at DOMAINfest, and to working with others in our industry toward a productive 2010.

Afternic Weekly Sales Continue To Be Strong

Written on January 21st, 2010 by directnavigation2 shouts

Afternic had just under $600,000 in sales last week with the two leaders being barbecuing.com for just $10,750 and motorcyclecenter.com for $10,000.00.
Barbecuing is a nice niche in the food category and well worth the price paid. I also liked HOWTOCODE.com at $2,000.00 and NYFurniture.com at $8000.

Written on January 19th, 2010 by directnavigationone shout

Yes you read it correctly Free-sms.de was sold through Sedo for 115,000 euros which is about $170000 USD. I even called Sedo to confirm. Other notable sales were toys.co.za at $ 20,000 and connectionexpress.com at $30,000.

I though good values were reached by the buyer of hotelnetwork for only $5,000 and marketingdegree.net for $2500.

Rick Latona is a major player in the domain name market. Currently Ron Jackson’s DNJournal.com features Rick Latona in a detailed interview.

I remember Rick from the old days. I sold him Portugese.com for what by todays standards could be called lunch money. I look forward to seeing it in action.

Your Shark Tank – Review and Comment on This Real Business Plan

Written on January 11th, 2010 by directnavigation5 shouts

I receive emails constantly. Some people ask to buy their domains while others ask for me to sell them domains. Every once in a while I receive an email asking for me to invest in their business plan. Recently, both Traffic and Domainfest added a “shark tank” to their agenda. The Shark Tank is based on a TV show that gives entrepreneurs the opportunity to show their business plan and ask the panel for an investment.

I am going to post a business plan that was sent to me by a reader of the DirectNavigation.com blog. Please note that I do not know the domainer who sent it to me and I do not recommend one way or another whether someone should invest in his business plan. That is your decision. I post this plan as a way for the domainer to learn from comments of domainers, investors and all other readers of this blog.

His business plan is up at http://www.slideshare.net/spreadoffense/spreadoffensecom-business-plan-2009

The plan may be a little difficult to read at that site. If anyone can tell me how to attach a PDF to my wordpress post, I will add a PDF which would be easier to read.

Cookinggames.com sells for $350,000 – WTF ?

Written on January 6th, 2010 by directnavigation46 shouts

According to DNJournal.com, the domain name CookingGames.com was sold at NoktaDomains for $350,000. My first reaction was disbelief, however, it was coming from a reputable source so I knew it to be true. Then I looked at the page to see what the heck were cooking games. The site reminded me of DressUp.com. Dressup.com was a name that was sold a few years back and then resold very quickly at a huge profit due to its absurdly high PPC revenue. Since the CookingGames.com site is identical to DressUp.com, I assume the same case senerio. Either way, congrats to the seller.

Drop Guard – Amazing New Registrar Product Never Lets Domains Drop

Written on January 6th, 2010 by directnavigation6 shouts

How many domainers have made the mistake of not renewing a domain? I for one have had it happen to me and I will never forget that I bought it back at auction for over $20,000.

I, like most keep a detailed inventory list along with automatic renewals and check each domain as the renew. However, many domainers leave their domains set auto renew and forget about it. What happens if the credit card that is on your account declines? Maybe you will get another renewal notice? Many registrars aren’t as helpful as they once were since they auction off names that you don’t pay for. What else can be done?

Webmasters.com has the best new domain product that I have seen in a long time. Their DropGuard option which costs an additional $1 per year guarantees that a domain name will not drop for one year after its expiration date if not renewed on time. Expired domains with DropGuard enabled are held in disabled state in the customer’s account, and can be renewed for up to one year after its expiration date. Upon renewal, the regular renewal fee still applies. Basically, the registrar insures against non renewal, and if a domain isn’t renewed for any reason, they pay the renewal fee out of their own pocket until the owner claims it. If the domain isn’t claimed after a year, they take the loss on the renewal fee.

I tested it out and it worked great. I predict that this cool feature will eventually be offered at by others but for the time being it’s only at Webmasters.com
