Still Getting Bido Emails Even Though Service Shut Down.

Written on May 10th, 2010 by directnavigation4 shouts

I was sorry to see Bido.com shut down last week. Sahar is an old friend and a true entrepreneur. Some say you learn more from failure than success. I have no doubt we will be seeing more from him in the near future.

I was a surprised this morning that I received a Bido.com email promoting the service. It only proves that in cyberspace nothing ever truly ends.

here is a copy of the email.

Hello larry,

It’s the start of a new week at Bido, so we have reset your complimentary voting points to 0. You have all week to use these points to vote on inventory that you wish to see go to auction.

If something that you voted on sells, you become a partner in the profits. So be sure to use the credits and vote on inventory at Bido wisely. The first person to vote on an item earns the most. So be sure to check what’s been submitted on a regular basis to find the gems first.

If you use up your complimentary voting points, you may exchange 1 Bido Credit for 2220 additional voting points.

To learn more about the Vote For Profits program, view the payout scale, and try the earning calculator, please click here:
http://www.bido.com/VoteForProfits

Bido offers a downloadable file of what’s been submitted, view it and vote now at http://www.bido.com

The Bido Team

Nice Domain Dropping On Namejet

Written on May 10th, 2010 by directnavigation5 shouts

Every few days, I’ll check out namejet.com to see what’s dropping. Last week I saw Napa.org go into auction. It sold for $ 7101, which I thought was a great price. Today I noticed computersupply.com. Currently the bidding is at $1010. I’m sure it will close higher. Two other domains listed also had me do a double take. I tried to understand why schumpeter-2006.org and trawlbase.org were both listed with current bids over $1,000 each. Normally I look further for curiosity but I’m swamped today. If anyone knows why those 2 have such high bids, lMK.

Let’s Talk Trends – Watches, Ties, Art, Domains

Written on May 7th, 2010 by directnavigation8 shouts

Last night I went for a cinco de mayo party. Yes, it was the day after but with 30 of us that’s the only way to get a table. As we sat and talked I noticed that only the older men (over 30) were wearing watches. In addition, everyone came after work, so I was surprised not to see anyone wearing a tie. It made me start to think. When i spoke to a few of the under 30, I asked if any of them owned a watch. Only one did and said it was a gift from his dad. He told me he never wears it since there is no need. He has an iphone that he can check for time. Why would he need to wear one he asked?

Would I start a business in either of those areas, no. Thats not saying you could not have a successful business. Look at Rick Latona. He started a site called webuywatches.com and is doing fairly well. However, it is not his only business.

We have seen alot change on the web. Netscape was the first major browser and had at one point virtually all of the market. That is no longer the case. Yahoo used to be the premier search engine on the web. That is no longer the case.

There are also trends showing upside of various products and industries. An art auction at Sotherbys the other day, someone purchased the highest recorded sale at auction for a painting. Over 100 million USD for a Picasso. People are spending that much because it is an amazing and unique work of art that cant be replicated and whose value has shown increasing over time. The same thing can be said about generic domains. They are unique and cant be replicated. A generic domain is like a fine piece of art. The trend for domains is increased registrations especially with all the new tld’s. As more domains come into the market place it only raises value for the prime generic .com’s as they are domaining’s answer to fine art.

Monte Cahn Discusses Photo.com Million Dollar Sale and Upcoming Auction

Written on May 5th, 2010 by directnavigation6 shouts

I was looking today at the names listed on the Snapnames Ft Lauderdale auction. I thought the auction had the best list of generic domains that I have seen at auction in while. I emailed Monte to tell him that and also to ask if he had any comments on the Million dollar Photo.com deal.

Here is what he said:

Thanks. This was a sale that took several months to complete. An end
user purchased the domain but their site is not ready yet….we just
could not wait to make the announcement given DFG and some of the best
names in the industry are going up for sale next week. Did you see the
great names we have? We just locked up CommunityCollege.com,
Karate.com, and of course have WiFi.com, Dating.com, Detox.com,
Jeans.com, etc. Look at the gems on this list:
https://www.snapnames.com/store/liveprebid.action?ig=524#store;storeName
=liveprebid

We are really focusing on the end user and corporate buyer more than
ever before. Our last 3 auctions had more names purchased by end users
than all the years prior so now I think we are in the best position to
bring the very best names to the end user/corporate market and validate
ROI and value. Sellers still have to be reasonable on their price to
create a bidding environment – that is exactly what happened with
Photo.com. We had 3 parties interested after making the name available
in an earlier auction. The Buyer and the Seller had very specific needs
to get the transaction completed and we were extremely flexible in
making that happen. Other sales that we still cannot report, are coming
in due to having flexible payment term options through Moniker’s Escrow
and Secure Transfer services and that is also enabling more higher end
sales to get done.

Thanks Monte for your reply

If You Build It They Will Come (maybe)

Written on May 3rd, 2010 by directnavigationone shout

The most famous line in the movie “Field of Dreams” is “If you build it they will come”. For those of you that have not seen the movie, they are not talking about building a website. If they were, the line would have to be changed to “if you build it and add Seo, purchase advertising, create back links, add content, and some other stuff they will probably come.
It takes more than just a great generic domain to get search engine traffic. Some search engine’s add value to your site if the domain name matches the category but most category’s do not have enough search volume to live off that one category and the domains direct navigation type ins.

Finding the answers to getting traffic involves much and trial and error. How does one start you may ask? For those of you not familiar with seo, there are many sites on the web that will give some basic Seo information like seobook.com. They also have a paid section that adds forums and other tools. For help with building the website, there are a number of excellent sites like freelancer.com where you can hire hourly workers.

Good luck with any project you have, but remember that while the domain name may be the most important part of the of the site, it is not the only part necessary.

Rumor – There was a Traffic Show In Milan This Week

Written on April 29th, 2010 by directnavigation7 shouts

Years ago, Rick Schwartz got 100 plus domainers out of their basement. They all followed the Pied Pipper to a small Marriott in Delray Beach. It was truly a special time. Most of us had known one another by name for years, but this was an opportunity to see the face behind the voices. Because of this show Demand Media was later formed by Richard Rosenblatt. He had read the Business 2.0 article Paul Sloan wrote about that show and turned Demand into a billion dollar company.

I went to the first 10 traffics. Some were amazing, others simply the opportunity to see old friends and network. It was only a matter of time that others would start shows. Competition started coming from Oversee’s Domainfest, Domainroundtable and some other smaller shows. Domainfest was such a hit, they are added 2 one day shows (New York and FLorida) and a European show.

There was a rumor that there was a Traffic Show in Milan this week, but even so, would you care?

Traffic over the last year had started to get dated. Same Speakers, same people, higher prices. People didn’t care if they missed it as there were more advertisers than attendees. Rick Latona licensed the Targeted Traffic show from Rick and Howard. He brought in a much needed overhaul. He started by asking what domainer’s wanted to see. He set a goal to have 5 shows all over the world. Latona is a great entrepreneur. If anyone can pull it off, he can.

Traffic Shows used to be a must go to event. Important connections were made. When you missed it, you know you missed it. Many domainer’s don’t feel that way anymore especially after the powerful Domainfest show this past January.

I hope Latona can build Targeted Traffic back to a show that’s one looks forward to going to.

It’s Finally Happened – Internet Ads Spending Beats Magazine Spending for 2009

Written on April 26th, 2010 by directnavigationno shouts

Last year online spending reached $ 22.6 Billion as opposed to magazine ad sales which which totaled $19.5 Billion. This is the first time that Internet spending was higher than magazine spending. However, overall there was a 3.4% dip in overall ad spending from 2008. I think with the economy on the rebound we should see a further increase in spending this year. Hopefully those added dollars will flow to domainers and not get lost in the Yahoo/Google black hole.

Why Is There A disconnect between Parking Companies and Domainers?

Written on April 23rd, 2010 by directnavigation14 shouts

Its been a over 3 years since I ran a parking company. I remember the early days when we were basically the only parking firm around. They were long hours but I enjoyed every minute of it. That’s because I was able to speak with other domainers, like myself, 24 hours a day. We spoke the same language. We understood what need to be done and did it. One of the most of favorite stories is how I helped one domainers life change around. This person had just got divorced and was about to lose his house. I had just met him and saw that he had an amazing portfolio that he was doing very little with. Remember, there was very few options for domainers back then. I asked if he would like to sell his names. As a typical programer / domainer, he said he’d rather lose his house first. I told him the possibility existed that if i parked his names with us, i thought he could make at least $ 2,000. He couldn’t believe it but tried anyway. His first payment was not $2,000 but over $20,000 for the month. His life changed for the better. It was a great feeling as people we worked with became good friends.

I hear many things today about parking firms, mostly negative. These range from no transparency to reduced revenue. It’s definitely a changed environment from the time Ari and I started until today, however there is no reason why there cant be more done to explain to the domainer the reasoning behind what is happening and what can be done.

I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on what you needs to be done in the industry.
