Demand Media lists Map.com and Run.com for sale on Sedo
I wrote the other day about Demand Media large drop in stock price from its high. I imagine that there are a number of insiders biting their nails waiting for the opportunity to cash out. Each day the the stock trades lower there will be less money for their future bank accounts. (note- the stock has gone up some since my first comment but still trades below the IPO price.) Today I saw that Demand Media has listed 2 amazing domains for sale at from what I am told, reasonable reserves. If these names do sell cheap, it makes one wonder if they are throwing out great assets in order to increase the bottom line.
Why is map.com a good name? What can you do with it that you could not do with an eight dollar name. GPS is available on phones. Selling old maps is not enough of a business to support the acquision price. So, who is this name good for?
Map.com is an awesome brand for a company that deals with finding anything – from deals to dates. $500K brand I would estimate.
@steven when you go to Google Maps, what you see/use is still called a “map”.
Steven,
I completely agree, it is a terrible domain. Barely worth more than $8.
steven = clown
folks: no name calling please. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.n However, if you feel it’s only an $8 domain, you may want to get into another business.
Demand Media has had some success, but I’m not sure their business model can be sustained, in terms of their alleged “content”. As for Map.com, I completely agree with Atta on this one … we use a map, it will always be called a map, and while the plural probably would have more value, to say it’s an $8 domain is just being cynical. LOL!
I agree with Danny, Map.com is short, and it could be a brand of a GPS company. Map.com – We get you there!
I did not say it was only worth $8 bucks but not a name that is going to signal to the market they are selling off their best assets. I would look at it as a positive if they found a sucker to buy it for good money.
The name CAN be used for many uses. However, it’s defined use is saturated and limited.
Typewriter.com is also worth more than $8 bucks but the upside potential in the name is limited based on a “high” valuation of the domain owner (example only).
They going to be on a namejet auction ? 😉
@adam – if so, maybe they can charge themselves a reduced rate 🙂
It’s May 6, 2011 now — what was the end result on the Map.com ?? (smile)
