Both Facebook and Google Have entered into the world of URL shorteners. At present, Google’s goo.gl will only be used for Feedburner and Google Toolbar while Facebook’s FB.me is currently used on links from mobile versions of it’s site. This is not be good news for bit.ly, currently the most popular shortener service. I am sure it’s only a matter of time before Google and Facebook expand these services.
Why are they starting these services? It all about the data thats collected. Very valuable and very scary to think about the information these companies collect and use.
Do I see this a move away from .com’s? Not at all. Both companies went for a 2 letter TLD as opposed to the 3 letter .com in order to shorten the URL as much as possible
