I often get emails asking if I would sell a domain. Most just say “how much for _________”. These are unsolicited offers for domains that I am not looking to sell. Many of them are more interesting. A few have told me they were a college student wanting to start a web site. Some have said it’s their initials. Todays was a new one. I received an offer on a 3 letter domain for $125. His reasoning was “ that’s a very good margin (355%) since you only paid $35.” It’s a logical theory offering an excellent return but I must turn it down.

Did you counter with an explanation on the value behind 3 character domains – and the price you would be willing to accept?

“Your getting a hundred times your investment” the end user says. I used to get upset and more than a few times I would tell the end user , “heres my answer, are you listening, listen closely now” Then hang up in their face. lol,..Over the years I’ve grown in maturity, or so I think. Now I tell them very simply, ” So your saying if I have a lottery ticket worth a million dollars I should be happy to give it to you for a hundred or a thousand times what I paid for it”. Then tell them to call me back when they’re serious.
