Would You Take $30,000,000 Euros If You Owned ChatRoulette.com?

Written on April 22nd, 2010 by directnavigation11 shouts

Let’s say you start a simple website. This website lets you look and chat with random people on the internet 1 person at a time. Before you know it, it goes viral and becomes one of the most viewed websites on the net. That’s exactly what happened with ChatRoulette.com. Now, lets say someone offers you $30,000,000 Euros. Would you take it or would you gamble for the billion dollar payout? After all, gambling on success seems to have paid off for YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

Some might say that copycat sites can easily do what Chatroulette.com. That’s true, however when your first to market and get the exposure a site like chatroulette.com has, it’s almost impossible to accomplish similar results. Will some copycats be successful? Yes but I don’t think anywhere near the original. The problem comes with making money. YouTube, Twitter and Facebook all faced such hurdles but seemed to figure out a revenue model.

Would I take the money if I was offered $30 million euro’s and run. It would be a tough decision but Yes I would. What about you?

BTW – It is rumored that such an offer has been made.

kosherhibachi.com listed 2nd in Google for “Auto Insurance” – How Did They Beat Google?

Written on March 22nd, 2010 by directnavigation14 shouts

I went to Google a few minutes ago and could not believe what I saw. When I typed in the term “Auto Insurance” into Google, the 2nd link was for a domain called kosherhibachi.com. I then tried the term “car insurance rates” in Google and saw that kosherhibachi.com was also 2nd for that keyword. Obviously something is wrong. i thought to myself “has someone figured out a way to beat google at SEO and bring a domain that who’s domain itself has no value for the category”. Obviously the answer is yes. I assume much black hat seo is at work. They have taken a name of a former kosher restaurant in Brooklyn and made it into a HUGE moneymaker as that category has big payouts. How long will this last? Probably not much longer as Google is usually good at finding and fixing these type of actions. I also believe they used a non generic domain, as most likely the domain will be banned in the near future and that would be a waste of a good generic domain as opposed to using a throw away name such as kosherhibachi.com

HUGE Deals Will Be Happening Real Soon

My head is starting to spin. Is this 2007 or 2010? All the talk has been about lower ppc revenue, less money be earned by domainers and what else can be done to stimulate revenue. One would assume that domains and domain companies would be in bad shape. Well, Thats definitely not the case. Poker.org is just 1 of many big deals that I hear from trusted sources that are in process. One big deal ( I’m sorry i meant HUGE deal) that I know of will make people think we are back in the golden days. Well, maybe we are.

Google Starts a New Product And Guess Who Owns The .Com

Written on February 11th, 2010 by directnavigation3 shouts

While I was using Google today, I stumbled on a Google product that I have not seen before. All new Google products start in beta. However, since I did not see this new service yet on it’s “more Google products” page, it must be in double secret beta or possibly a sub service of a Google service such as Maps. The product is called “Favorite Places”. According to Google’s site describing the service :

“We’ve identified over 100,000 businesses in the U.S. as “Favorite Places on Google” based on Google users’ interaction with local business listings. Each business is receiving a window decal with a unique QR code that you scan with your phone to read reviews, star the business as your own favorite and more. Check out a few of the favorites below, and try scanning a code”.

The domain FavoritePlaces.com has always been travel related and will continue to be so. How do I know that. I own the .com

Back From DomainFest With Lots of Good Stories

Written on January 31st, 2010 by directnavigationno shouts

I’m sorry for going dark the last few days. Since there were a number of blogs covering the basics, i.e. the seminars, the auction, etc., I thought I’d wait and recap some of the events and tell some of the interesting stories I heard the past few days.

First, Domainfest was everything I thought it would be and more. Oversee had a first class event and deserves to get recognized for a Tradeshow that represents the needs of the Domaining community. The seminars were targeted to the needs of the domainer. There were seminars on getting domains, SEO and SEM, and new monetization methods among others. The selection of speakers were first rate (not just because I was one). My favorite of the seminars was on SEO and SEM. You can’t do better than having both Danny Sullivan and Bruce Clay on the same panel. Their insight was extremely helpful to me. I plan to go to more of the SEO Tradeshows that they participate in.

The selection of Tony Hsieh was perfect. He told of his starting LinkExchange and selling it to Microsoft for $265,000,000. He detailed the process of building zappos.com into one of onlines largest shoe retailers and his philosophy on making employees part of a family unit.

If I had to highlight just one reason to go to the next Domainfest, it would be the networking. Yes other domain shows like Traffic offer excellent networking, however this show with approximately 1000 attendees trumped the recent Traffic shows where attendance has dropped substantially.

The rumor is that there will be another Domainfest this year in Europe, sometime in September or October.

Tomorrow I will write one of the most amusing stories I heard at Domainfest. I don’t think you’ll hear this story anywhere prior to my posting it on DirectNavigation.com.

Using Jesus.com To Pick Up Women – Seeing is Believing

Written on January 12th, 2010 by directnavigation2 shouts

There are some sites that offer information. Other websites purely look to make money. But sometimes you just don’t see the obvious benefits of owning a primary generic domain. Take Jesus.com. It was owned many years ago by a different owner than it’s owned by today.

The owner of Jesus.com stated that “young women interested in sharing a shower with Jesus can now have their dreams come true.” The site included links such as Date Jesus (who by the way according to his resume likes “Long romantic walks, lying on a grassy field at night gazing into the stars”, “shower with Jesus”, “sermons” ” multimedia”,”music” and “contact”.

Also included is the following “All requests from young women in the DC Metro area will be considered. Women from out of town will have to handle their own travel provisions, though a guest room is often available if needed. In most cases Jesus will be available and eager to speak to you about spirituality if desired. If you are not spiritual, Jesus will share a beer and pleasant existential banter.”

Should I take an offer of $100,000 on a .net?

Written on January 10th, 2010 by directnavigation51 shouts

I’m .com person. I have looked far and wide to help purchase some of the best generic .com’s in the word. However, there are certain keywords that are extremely valuable even in other extensions. One such phrase is ” Car Insurance”. I own Carinsurance.net. I purchased it a few years back from the winner of a snapnames.com drop. Back in those days, Snapnames did not auction domains. What they did was charge you a small sum, around $69. If no one else had a “snap” on it, you could snap it and hope that they won it for you. a few domainers built their empires on snaps.

I have had various offers over the years, some higher, but have always kept the Carinsurance.net domain due to the large lead gen and SEO possibilities. A few recent offers at the $100,000 range has got me off my motivated into developing it.

What would you do?
