From $1,500,000 to $120,000 – A Domain Lesson Learned
I still buy domains. I keep a list on my desk and every so often I go through it. The problem I have is that I don’t go through the list often enough. I seem to realize that fact when I read about a name being sold that I had on that list.
That particular name was offered to me constantly at $1,500,000. While it is very good name, it’s not worth that to me. I would contact the owner less often over time mostly do the the fact that his asking price was so high and always the same. I realized today, that it had been far to long since we connected. Especially since that domain sold for $120,000. The name was OnlineDegree.com. For the price, it was an excellent buy. Congrats to the buyer.
Demand Media Loses A Billion Dollars In Valuation
Five months ago, Demand Media went public at $17 per share. Within a short time, the stock hit a high above $28 per share. It seemed like they hit the market at the perfect time. Internet stocks had once again become the favorites of Wall Street.
Flash forward to today, almost 6 months after that opening bell, Demand’s stock has tanked. It hit a low yesterday of 11 3/4. That means in a matter of a few months, the value of stock has gone down over ONE BILLION DOLLARS. Insiders, who have to wait 6 months after the IPO to sell their shares must be biting their nails as the value of their nest eggs continue to erode. My guess was that the stock would be around $10 at the six month mark. I guess in a few days we will all see what happens when additional shares are unloaded on the open market.
Google To Show Domain Names In Adwords HeadLines
How many times have you click on an adwords ad link thinking you were going to a certain website, only to be taken somewhere else? Obviously it has been happening to too many people. Google today announced that it will display the landing page’s domain name as part of the headlines on top placement ads.
The change should increase click thru to adsense ads that have strong generic domains. This is another reason to own prime generic domains for your business.

Is Demand Media Selling Amazing Domains To Help Stock Price?

I wrote the other day about Demand Media large drop in stock price from its high. I imagine that there are a number of insiders biting their nails waiting for the opportunity to cash out. Each day the the stock trades lower there will be less money for their future bank accounts. (note- the stock has gone up some since my first comment but still trades below the IPO price.) Today I saw that Demand Media has listed 2 amazing domains for sale at from what I am told, reasonable reserves. If these names do sell cheap, it makes one wonder if they are throwing out great assets in order to increase the bottom line.
Insurance Domains Seem To be Real Hot
As I was writing this post, i noticed Elliot mentioned in Elliots blog that CarInsurance.TV just sold for $13,000 and CarInsuranceQuotes.TV is asking 13 million. I decided to see whats still available in the major Insurance lead gen category domains. In the last few months Insurance lead gen names domain names have done extremely well in the aftermarket. For example, Homeownersinsurance.com sold for $570,000 this past November. All the major domains with .com, .net or .org now have sites on them, with the exception of Insurance.net. FYI – I emailed the owner of Insurance.net, he offered me the domain name for 3 million USD. As for the latest Insurance build out,It seems that Insurance.org, was turned into an insurance lead site for insurance quotes just the other day.
Just recently another major insurance .com domain was sold with an NDA attached for millions. It seems that these names have become printing presses for their owners. There seems to be no letup in that market.
Demand Media Stock Is Going DOWN, DOWN, DOWN
What will Demand Media stock be at six months following their IPO date? That is a very important question that many employees and early investors are asking. That date is when they have their first opportunity to sell their shares.
In the past, many technology employees have become overnight millionaires once their firm went public but had worthless paper once they were able to sell their shares. Of course you have companies such as Google and Apple, where many employees did very well when their time came.
Let’s get back to Demand Media. The stock was one of the first high flying tech firms to go out this year. I can tell you that they threw an incredible party at Domainfest celebrating their IPO. Whats not to celebrate. They priced at $17 per share and hit a high over $27. Unfortunately what goes up, must come down. When Google made changes to their algorithm, some Demand sites suffered large traffic decreases. It must have put a scare into investors as the stock has been trading down each day. Today it hit an all time low of 13.99 during the trading day.
What will it be in 3 more months. My personal guess is under $10, which is a lot higher than I think it will be in 1-2 years.
