Over 80% of 2 number .com ( NN.com) under Chinese control

Published on September 22nd, 2014no comments

Due to the rising NN.com pricing, yesterday I took a look at all 2 Number .com domains form 01.com all the way up to 99.com. From the whois information, I looked at registrants, both current and prior, registrars they are at and spoke with some of the domainers that currently own or those that owned them in the past. While I knew they were a hot commodity, I was surprised at the monopoly the Chinese investors have on these domains. Over 80% is owned or under the control of Chinese domainers
I will be looking at other markets that the Chinese have been buying lately, such as nnn.com, LLL.com and LL.com. and make a report on those in the future.

” anydomain”.com.com typos forward to .xyz registry

Published on July 15th, 2014no comments

I just discovered the following and wanted to share. The domain .com.com gets alot of traffic. This means if you add .com to any url ending in .com (ex. cnn.com becomes cnn.com.com), you will not end up on your intended page, but end up on the webpage for .com.com. I remember analyzing that domains traffic many year ago and was impressed by the volume. Unfortunately the PPC conversions were weak so we passed on it.

It seems that.xyz currently uses these accidental typos to redirect to a domain sales page for .xyz. I think the video on the page is well done. I’d love to know how its converting.

Does GTLD stand for “Going to Lose Dough”?

Published on January 21st, 201410 comment

Last week I was at Namescon. First I have to give Richard, Jodi and Jothan a huge congratulations. They put on the first of what I think will be EPIC shows.
Much discussion was placed on the new Gtld’s verse the existing tld’s (mostly .com’s) Of course there were many that were looking forward to their arrival. These positive folks mostly were represented by those that were involved financially in the process. The .com lovers were mostly older domainers that had seen .mobi, .xxx and others fail miserably for the investors, but made lots of dough for the registries, auction houses and registrars.

I do think some Gtld’s will be a winner for all involved including domain investors. Others will help the average business looking for a simple domain that they could not otherwise get at an affordable price.

Speaking with a long time domainer today, he told me that Gtld stood for “Going to Lose Dough”. At first I laughed but I had to commend his reasoning. “Its a lot like Las Vegas”, he said. “The house are the Gtlds and the investors are the gamblers. Since the house usually comes out ahead, many investors may have found the meaning of Gtld.”

It’s only a matter of time to see if he’s right or wrong.

Please Say Hello At Namescon

I will be traveling tomorrow to Namescon in Las Vegas. I want to put a shout out to Richard Lau, Jodi Chamberlain, Jothan Frakes and all others responsible for putting together such an impressive schedule in just 3 months. It looks like Namescon will be the perfect successor to Domainfest/Webfest Global. I will be speaking, Tuesday at 4Pm, on a panel entitled “Buying and Selling Premium Names. Please stop by and say hello then or at anytime during the show.
I looking forward to seeing both old and new friends.

In addition for those of you interested in monetizing your sites, Affiliate Summit will be in Las Vegas starting Sunday. I will be attending on Sunday and highly recommend going, if you are able to.

Heritage Auctions To Hold 2nd Domain Name Auction

Published on December 30th, 2013no comments

Aron Meystedt, a longtime friend and domainer, managed to hold an historic auction at Heritage Auctions in Novemeber 2013. Over 2 million dollars in domains were sold during and right after the auction.

A second auction has been scheduled for mid March. They are seeking 1 and 2 word category domains, as well as generic branding names priced from $1000 to $100,000 and up. If you want to try and get some names in the auction you can email him at AronM@HA.com

Good luck to all.

Facebook knew I Changed a Phone Number

Published on December 12th, 2013no comments

While this is not domain related, I found an email that I received by Facebook yesterday very interesting.

Hi Larry,
The phone number 1917xxxxxxx has been deactivated for Facebook text messages due to the following reason: the mobile service provider this number was registered with no longer recognizes this number as valid. If you changed your mobile number or switched mobile service providers, please visit Facebook to add your number again.
Thanks,
The Facebook Team

I understand that the number is needed for their messaging service, but I had not used the messaging service since I changed the number, so I assume that Facebook is monitoring all changes. It made me think what other things that Facebook or other services that I had given information to in the past is monitoring.

Toby Clements Upgrades Daily Domain Newsletter

Published on November 25th, 2013no comments

Toby runs a highly successful newsletter which offers domain for sale on a daily basis.he recently changed his website to allow make offers on their exclusive inventory, He has gone 1 step further, adding a make offer link directly from his newsletter. Additionally,he will also be pulling data to show various stats to prospective buyers.

I look forward to see how these changes effect sales.

here is Toby’s note:

Hi Everyone,

As I mentioned yesterday, we have made a pretty big change on our newsletter and are hoping it will net us all some more sales in the future.

For years, I have always wondered what a “make offer” feature would do on my platform, but never launched it because the “buy now” option we have always had, always did the job.

Around 10 days ago, we made it possible for everyone to make offers on our full exclusive inventory list, but we are taking it a step further today and offering that option on the names that are listed in the newsletter.

From now on, there will be a Buy Now Price, Make Offer Link, and an Information Link which will share with you any internal information we have on the domain or stats that are pulled from sites like estibot.com, etc…..

Keep in mind that this is all a work in progress. If something works, we will keep it and build on it. If it doesn’t, we will scrap it and start over.

We are always open to your positive and negative criticism. Please feel free to comment.

Now, take a look and let us know if you are interested by using the new make offer link!

Regards,

Toby Clements
